Problems in Translating Literary Works






The English Literary Association of J.J.College of Arts and Science (Autonomous) Sivapuram Pudukkottai organized a Special Lecture on “Problems in Translating Literary Works “at 11am on Tuesday ,23.8.2022. Dr S. Mani Meghalai ,Assistant Professor of English APSA College Thiruppattur was the Resource Person.

She distinguished literary and non literary translation and outlined special problems involved in translating particular literary texts. The problems were linguistic, literary and Cultural. Speaking on issues of equivalence and cultural disparities ,she pointed out the problems in translating from classical languages to Modern ones, were insuperable. The literary translator had to deal with culture - specific genres, idioms and figures of speech. The problems in translating poetry , drama and fiction were really complex. The translator had to be competent in the two languages, cultures and the respective theatrical practices. However the affective aspects of Literature, were powerful aids in Decoding but presented woman problems in Re coding. The speech was followed by an interactive session.

Ms S.Selvi Head of the Department presided over the session. S. Karthikeyan II B.A delivered the welcome address, A.Reshma Begam of II MA compered the programme, and M.B. Thirisha III B.A proposed the vote of Thanks.
