Pudukkottai is a historical place, the princely state of the Thondamans. It was the first native domain to merge voluntarily with the Indian Union after Independence. When Pudukkottai District was formed in 1974, Pudukkottai town became the District Headquarters.
The town began to progress steadily in various fields. Though there were two Arts Colleges and a College of Education, Pudukkottai had to wait for nearly two decades, for realising the revolutionary concept of higher education, in the form of a self-financing college of this kind.
It is often said that education is the foundation of a nation and much of the nation's future and progress depend on her system of education. The system of education is in a state of flux, in conformity with the growing demands for new branches of knowledge and diversified advancements in the modern technological world.
Foreseeing this, the Karpaga Vinayaga Educational Trust deemed it fit to start a new college with the name "J.J. College of Arts and Science" in order to fulfil the aspirations of the parents and the student population.
Our College was inaugurated on 17th January, 1994 by the then Hon`ble Minister for Education, Prof. K. Ponnusamy, under the presidentship of the then Hon`ble minister for Housing and Urban Development, Mr. S. Regupathy, who is the founder of the College. The Bharathidasan University graciously accorded affiliation.
Within a short span of time, the College has been able to offer sixteen research, eighteen post-graduate, fifteen under-graduate,and two post-graduate diploma courses in emerging fields of science and one certificate course and UGC- sponsored add-on courses in Translation Proficiency in English and Human Rights Education.
With its excellent infrastructure, sophisticated laboratories, well-stacked library, spacious classrooms, convenient furniture, well-furnished separate hostels for boys and girls within the Campus, the College provides a conducive atmosphere to promote the academic endeavours of both the faculty and the students.
To improve communication skills, language laboratory was established and its service is available for the students of all departments. The College has started a Certificate Course in Functional English, which can be learnt concurrently with the regular degree programme. The Certificate is awarded by the University.
All the departments organise various programmes like Seminars, Guest Lectures, Conferences, Symposia at the National and State Levels in order to supplement class room lectures. These enrichment activities invariably enhance. the students' knowledge and motivate them to undertake advanced research.
The College, with its high profile, is placed among the leading educational institutions in the country. The College still marches ahead with bold steps towards its destination, the vision of making itself a premier research centre. As a crowning glory for its unmatched excellence, the College was accredited with B++ Grade (Five Star Status) by the NAAC, in 2003, re-accredited with 'A' Grade in 2009 and again re-accredited with 'A' Grade in 2015. After re-accreditation, the College has made remarkable strides in the field of higher education and reached the stature of a total quality institution.
Our College was conferred Autonomous status by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli on 19.10.2012.
The College immediately took all necessary steps to implement autonomy with effect from November, 2012. New Curricula and Syllabi for the various programmes have been prepared and implemented from the second semester of the academic year 2012-2013, after due approval by the Boards of studies, Academic council and Governing Council of our college.
