Department of English

Started in 1994, the department is as old as the college and offered the Part II English course for all UG programmes till 2005. Now it offers BA and MA English (Autonomous) and M.Phil English (Affiliated to the University).

The courses are popular and the intake overflows into more than one section in UG. In 2019-20 there are 25 students in II M.A; 22 in I M.A; 67 in III B.A; 73in II B.A; 97in IB.A (Two sections) Since the conferment of Autonomous status, the department has revised the curricula courses and syllabi thrice - 2013, 2016, 2019. There has been a progressive increase in the CBCS options especially in the elective and inter disciplinary courses. All efforts have been taken to harmonize and fulfill local, regional, national and global needs in keeping with the core values of the NAAC. The overall thrust is on turning out articulate, public spirited citizens inspired by noble values who can take up the

responsibilities of nation building by fitting into various roles in society.

Programmes engineered to ensure their steady widening and deepening of the content/methods of teaching-learning and promote employability and social competence through skill promotion and accompanying personality development, extensional sensibility and powers of reasonings and the capacity to respond to real life situations. MBE's like Translation Theory and Practice,Developing Language Skills SBE's like Journalism,Reporting and Editing IDC's like English for Competitve Exams , ensure that students imbibe the requisite skills and ethical values to take up employment/build up careers. Learning by doing ensures skill promotion.PG students have project work as part of their final semester. They become initiated to research and research reportage. The department allows only individual projects. To ensure that every student is trained in research.

The teaching-learning process is student centric and the skills of language and communication are acquired through steady graded, guided practice. Due importance is given to the spoken and written skills in teaching and evaluation. The department prepares its own text books for Part II English. So far 20 such books have been brought out in keeping with consecutive syllabus-revisions.

The results in the end semester examinations are encouraging, ranging from 75% to 100% in individual courses, with rare slides . Programme-wise the number of students - both UG and PG earning their degrees has looked up as a result of the methodical practice they get in class room exposure and assignments/tests. The number of students earning university ranks has also gone up.

The English Literary association arranges periodical special lectures by experts in various streams besides organising students seminars and inter-departmental and inter-collegiate competitions.Students plan and implement such programmes as training in event management.Many of our students are active in NSS Rotaract,YRC/RRB etc.

They participate in awareness drives and social service camps Our students have won laurels in co-curricular and extra- curricular activities too. They are given steady guidance and practice in events of their choice. The department has excellent relations with its alumnae. The teachers keep track of students progression to higher studies and employment through effective social media contacts. Many of the alumnae are well placed in teaching and executive positions while a few have opted for media- work.

The department has all the requisite infrastructure in men and materials. There are 27teachers on its rolls. The majority, all except one have M.Phil qualification; three have Ph.D; three are in varying stages of completing their theses. There are three M.Eds and 17 B.Eds.

The Staff are noted for their participation in seminars, conferences, workshops etc. in peer institutions. They also attend FDPs and refresher courses with elan. In the context of the COVID 19 shut down the department organized a a grammatical quiz for faculty and students to relieve the tension of social distancing and isolation.

The staff also posted e-lessons through the google classroom and e-content on the net on chosen topics of the syllabi for upcoming semester In addition to the copious racks on creative and critical writing in English in the central library the department has a section library with 110 volumes. Journals like ELTAI , LITT-CRIT and Indian literature are regularly subscribed for. There is also a language lab with a teacher console, DVD player, smart board and internet connectivity. There is also a collection of VCDs.

At the PG and M.Phil level the thrust areas of research are British literature, American literature, Commonwealth literature, Comparative literature, Translation, Indian writing in English and ELT.

At the methodology level, the department pracitises the communicative and communicational approaches with a latitude, experiments with a bi-lingual method and its intent on using a holistic approach based on a lang-lit balance to promote communicative competence among learners.

The department offers all cooperation to the administration and fellow departments by extending consultancy/ editorial services in event/research reportage.
