The Department of Biotechnology is a paradigm of technical innovation. Since the advent of the department in the year 1998 with the P.G. Programme, thereafter several programmes like B.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. were started. The focus of the department is primarily to excel both in academics and research in the frontier areas of modern biotechnology and related fields. The focus of these academic programs is to provide excellent environment and state-of-the-art infrastructure for hands-on training with industrial training using excellent instrumentation facilities like PCR, Digital microscope, UV Spectrophotometer, Electroporator and Gel Documentation System. The department has the choicest faculty to lead the students to the pinnacle of success in the form of highly qualified, experienced faculty members including four doctorates, actively involved in academic and research programmes in different disciplines of Bioscience. Their command over the subject is reflected in their course design and teaching pedagogy at the department.
The potentials in Biotechnology were further recognized by funding agencies like INSA, DST - SERB and DBT to support with research, human resource development and new opportunities to students for skill development and promotion of entrepreneurship and new start ups from amongst the students in the form conferences, workshops and seminars. Recently, the department received Rs.1,94,445 from INSA as a fund for the successful completion of Science Academies Lecture Workshop. Dr. Chandrakumar Natarajan, Senior Consultant and Head, Dept. of Neonatology, Kanchi Kamakoti Child's Trust Hospital, Chennai gave a speech in a virtual conference about COVID-19 which was aimed at identifying the main challenges and good practices related to preventing and countering the spread of the virus. The faculties of the department published a "Textbook on Environmental Science" to create environmental awareness. 24 research scholars have been awarded PhDs till now and 3 are currently pursuing their doctoral degrees. The Department is designed to capitalize on the strength by facilitating research partnerships between highly productive research teams that extend across departmental boundaries. These partnerships are established to bring together complementary research efforts in plant and animal studies, molecular biology and genetics, etc. Industrial visits have been arranged regularly for the students to inculcate industrial exposure.
The department conducts an intercollegiate competition 'Biospark' every year to inculcate the spirit of competitiveness and winning among the students. The students have won several prizes in various intercollegiate events many times and grabbed the overall championship for the special competition held in-view of silver jubilee celebration in the college.
