The English Literary Association of J.J College of Arts and Science (Autonomous),
Pudukkottai organized a Special Lecture on “Women’s Voices in Indian Writing in English” at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, 23rd July, 2025 for the benefit of her UG and PG students.
Dr. Pramela Priyadarshini, Associate Professor, Government Arts College for Women, Pudukottai, who was the resource person, spoke of the time-old marginalization of women voices and the many mutations, distortions and ventriloqual variations the voices constantly exemplify in their kaleidoscopic reactions to patriarchal side lining and outright oppression. Though women have made significant contributions in all genres, especially poetry and fiction, the walls of patriarchy are hard to crumble. Feminist voices continue to be misrepresented and under-represented in the literary canon. Female/ Feminists protagonists are often dubbed neurotic or eccentric.
Their view of society is seen as lopsided. They feel insecure whenever they try to speak out their experiences. Often, they have to put on a false bravado or seek refuge in mockery caricature, irony or satire. The whole issue is related to the question of how we view women – as helpmates? soul-mates? hand-maids? or sex-symbols? Women can find their voice as thinking, feeling, sentient beings only in a society built on mutual trust and respect among men and women. It is an issue to be settled in our homes, in our drawing-rooms, in our social get together, in our public lives. Lectures and seminars will not help women find their voice. What is required is understanding and appreciation as equal protagonists in the epic drama of life.
Earlier Ms. S. Selvi presided over the session and welcomed the gatherings and introduced the chief guest. Finally Mr. R. Sivakumar , Assistant Professor proposed the vote of thanks. A. Abirami of I M.A was the master of ceremonies.
