Executive Summary & Purpose

Overview: An educational field visit was organized by the Department of Biotechnology, J.J. College

of Arts and Science (Autonomous), Pudukkottai, on July 24, 2026, for III B.Sc Biotechnology students.

Under the leadership and guidance of Dr. G. Manigandan, Head of the Department, the visit aimed to

bridge academic theory with practical bio-entrepreneurship and employment opportunities in

sustainable agriculture and phytopharmaceuticals.

Destination 1: Nisha Organic Farm, Vepangudi

• Natural Organic Farming Exposure: Students observed chemical-free cultivation practices for

growing fruits and vegetables naturally. The session highlighted eco-friendly agricultural techniques that

preserve soil microflora, maintain ecological balance, and yield high-value organic produce.

• Vermicomposting Unit & Significance: The demonstration emphasized the role of earthworms in

converting organic agro-waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost. Students gained insights into

commercial bio-fertilizer production, waste-to-wealth conversion, and its importance in restoring soil

fertility.

• Panchagavya Preparation & Health Impact: Students received hands-on learning on traditional

Panchagavya formulation combining five bovine derivatives along with organic additives. The microbial

fermentation science behind Panchagavya, its role as a potent bio-booster, and its positive impact on

human health through toxic-free food systems were thoroughly explored.

Destination 2: Agasthiyar Mooligai & Herbal Physiotherapy Centre

• Herbal Drug Formulations & Processing: Students explored standardized extraction methods,

decoction, and preparation of herbal formulations, powders (choornams), and therapeutic oils derived

from medicinal plants.

• Ayurvedic Therapeutics for Diseases: The session demonstrated practical applications of

phytotherapy and Ayurvedic remedies in managing both acute infectious diseases and chronic ailments

(such as arthritis and diabetes), outlining potential career paths in herbal research and quality control.

Conclusion: The field visit successfully exposed students to emerging career avenues in bio-

entrepreneurship, organic input manufacturing, and herbal formulation units. Students expressed

immense gratitude to the college management, Principal and Convener Dr. G. Manigandan for providing

an enriching industrial exposure.
