Basic Concepts of Laboratory Animal Care in Biological Research

One Day State Level Workshop was organized on behalf of the Sumner’s Club of the

Department of BIOCHEMISTRY at J.J. College of Arts and Science(Autonomous), Pudukkottai,

under the prominent theme: " Basic Concepts of Laboratory Animal Care in Biological

Research" on 17.07.2026.

The workshop, themed "Basic Concepts of Laboratory Animal Care in Biological Research,"

was held on the college campus to address the growing importance of ethical standards in

scientific experimentation. During the program, students were given the unique opportunity to

witness various advanced BIOCHEMISTRY laboratory experiments first hand. Explanations and

demonstrations were provided regarding the utilization of mice and zebrafish in medical

research, such as for cancer, genetic diseases, and drug testing.

The event featured insightful sessions led by distinguished experts in the field:

ï‚· Dr. K. Karthikeyan, Assistant Professor from the Department of Food Science and

Nutrition, Periyar University, Salem, acted as a chief guest and delivered a special lecture

emphasizing the nutritional and physiological upkeep of laboratory animals.

ï‚· Dr. R. Ramesh, Assistant Professor from the Department of BIOCHEMISTRY, J.J.

College of Arts and Science (Autonomous), Pudukkottai, shared his expertise on the

practical challenges and methodologies involved in animal-based biological research.

The primary goal of the workshop was to raise awareness and provide hands-on training to

students and research scholars. Key areas of focus included:

 Educating researchers on how to handle laboratory animals humanely during

biological and medical studies.

 Ensuring the physical and psychological well-being of subjects in accordance

with standard ethical codes.

 Training participants on how to maintain animal house facilities and caging

systems strictly adhering to the guidelines of the central government’s CCSEA

(Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals).

The workshop was meticulously planned and coordinated.

82 participants from various institutions across Tamilnadu to part actively in the workshop.

There was a detailed discussion session during which the queries of the participants were delt
