English Language Education: Ethnographic Perspectives






The English Literary Association of the Department of English, J.J College of Arts and

Science (Autonomous), Pudukkottai organized a Special Lecture Programme on “English

Language Education: Ethnographic Perspectives” by Dr.V.L.Jayapual, Associate Professor and

Head, PG and Research Department of English, ST.Joseph’s College

(Autonomous)Tiruchirappalli, at 11 am on Thursday 13/07/2023.The speaker pointed out how

the language and culture are inseparable and communicative competence is a mix of linguistics

and cultural competence. But in English language teaching, we are facing a divide between the

language and it’s corresponding culture, especially in second language and foreign language

teaching. Coming to the Indian context he drew attention to pre- independence and post –

independence socio-cultural situation that warranted a drastic reform of methods and materials

for ELT. Infact, the emphasis has shifted from language teaching to language learning and

language education. We have to teach English in situation that are based on native culture –

national ,regional and local. Pointing out – the colonial hegemony of English in everyday life in

such basic matter as our dress and food habits. He wanted a resurrection of the Indian cultural

ethos in ELT.

The students actively participated in the ensuing discussion. Earlier K.Madhumidha II MA

Student Secretary, gave the welcome address. Mrs S.Selvi, Head of Department of English

introduce the Chief guest and Mr. R.Aravindh,Assistant Professor honored him with shawl.

R.Avantika, III BA compered the programme and S.Sastiga ,III BA proposed the vote of thanks.
