Under the auspices of the English Literary Association of J. J. College of Arts and
Science (Autonomous), Sivapurm, Pudukkottai, a Special Lecture was organised on the topic
“Values of Literature” at 11 a.m. on Friday (28/07/2023). The speaker Dr. L. Rajesh of Raja
Serfoji Government Arts and Science College(Autonomous), Thanjavur, underlined the close
links between life and literature. Literature reflects life, it also modifies men and life styles.
Cultural values, past and present are embodied in literature in highly eloquent and inspiring
terms. Literature informs, delights and transports. The right approach to literature is through
emotional response and intellectual analysis. Literature has a major share in moulding human
character. It turns out complete human beings equipped with not only job skills but also
principles and values needed for harmonious community living. It imparts values of life, love,
compassion, comaraderie and above all a spirit of tolerance and broad mindedness. The speech
was enlivened with quotations from creative and critical works that revealed the erudition of the
speaker and his ability to explain difficult ideas in a lucid simple manner. At the end of the
speech he clarified the doubts raised by some of the students and staff. Earlier Miss. S. Selvi,
Head of the Department of English welcomed the participants and introduced the chief guest as
an inspired and inspiring teacher of literature. Miss. P. Saranya of 2 nd B.A compered the
programme and Mr. B. Rajkumar of 3 rd B.A proposed the vote of thanks.
