Five day Faculty Development Programme






As a prelude to the commencement of the Academic Session of the Even Semester of 2022 – 2023, J.J. College of Arts and Science (Autonomous), Sivapuram, Pudukkottai organized a three day Faculty Development Programme on 08th, 09th and 10th December 2022.

On 8th December 2022, the programme was inaugurated by Dr.A.Narayanamoorthy, Dean (Research), Alagappa University, Karaikudi. In his speech on “Publishing Research Papers in high quality journals”, he underlined the importance of Research Publications, the benefits accruing from them and the modalities of preparing manuscripts and tuning them for publication. One should embrace research as a passionate mission and should not give in to temporary setbacks. Good research writing stems from analytic and evaluative reading. So the first step lies in reading good research articles. One should not be in a hurry to see one’s work in print. Quality comes first. He warned the teachers one may not find easy acceptance. He explained the processes of editorial and reviewers scrutiny. We may have to tackle critical comments. We should accept them in a positive frame of mind and try to revise our work. He also stressed the importance of peer criticism and expert advice.

Earlier, in her presidential address Dr. Kavitha Subramanian, Executive Trustee, Karpaga Vinayaga Educational Trust, Pudukkottai pointed out how teachers today have to be versatile funds of talents. They should not only teach but undertake and guide research. They should also be able to hope with ICT tools.

Dr.J. Parasuraman, Principal, welcomed the chief guest and the audience. He pointed out how teachers at J.J. College of Arts and Science (Autonomous) could benefit from the management’s constructive policies. He wanted the teachers to be inspirational figures.

Dr.P.Jeevan, Co-ordinator, IQAC and Head, Department of Microbiology introduced the resource person, outlining his sterling performance as teacher, researcher and Educational Administrator.

At the close of the session, Dr.Sathish Aaron Joseph, Head, Computer Applications and Co-ordinator Curriculum Development Cell, proposed the vote of thanks. 

On the second day (09.12.2022), Dr.E.Ramganesh, Department of Educational Technology, Director, IECD Bharathidasan University, Trichy spoke on “Teaching – Learning strategies for the 21st Century”. He outlined the Paradigm – Shift in Educational policy and process. The stress today is on personalized learning and social emotional learning.                         The curriculum designer has to be alive to and teaching has to orient towards socio – economic objectives. One has to keep in mind the goals of man-making education. No course and no teacher is relevant for all learners. The Learners should have the freedom to choose the content and the institution he wants. This is facilitated by our era of e-learning and e-resources.

Earlier Dr.J.Parasuraman, Principal, introduced and welcomed the chief guest and Dr.V.Sathyarekha, Head, Department of Business Administration proposed the vote of thanks.

In the afternoon session of the day Dr.Archunan, Dean, Research Marudupandiyar College, Thanjavur, Former Prof. and Head, Department of Animal Science, Bharathidasan University Trichy, addressed the faculty of physical and life sciences departments on “Essentials for a Research Proposal”. He emphasized the criteria for the choice of topic experimental design and analysis. One should confine oneself to specific areas of specialization and should not fight shy of consultations with peers when taking up multidisciplinary topics. He also stressed the need for proper documentation. The welcome speech was by Dr.S. Kanitha, Head, Department of Biochemistry and the vote of thanks was by Dr.M.Arumugam, Head, Department of Botany.

On the third day 10.12.2022 Dr.S.Srinivasa Ragavan, Controller of Examinations, Bharathidasan University, Trichy spoke on “Scholarly information and Communication Systems”. He outlined the various sources and types of information that could help one in writing theses. He also listed out various types of research publications. Even “Notes and quries, diagrams, graphs and formulae” could trigger fellow researchers and so were valuable contributions.

Ms. S.Selvi, Head, Department of English delivered the welcome address and Dr.R.Manimaran, Head, Department of Information Technology proposed the vote of thanks.

In the final session of the programme Dr.J.Jeyakanthan, Professor and Head, Chairperson, Department of Bioinformatics, Alagappa University, Karaikudi addressed the staff on “How to write a Project Proposal”. He outlined the modalities of drafting a research proposal, the need to emphasize the social urgency and utility and sketch the possible outcomes of the study to impress possible funding agencies. He spoke of different funding agencies and their areas of specialization. Every agency had its format for making applications online. It is essential to stick to the format, the specified word length and be brief, clear, specific and focused in one’s presentation. Proper budgeting is also essential. 

Earlier Dr.S.Jeevan, Academic Co-ordinator, Head, Department of Microbiology delivered the welcome address. Dr.G.Manikandan, Head, Department of Biotechnology proposed the vote of thanks.

All the sessions were interactive and the staff felt they were greatly benefited by the programme.
