“Medicines cure diseases, but doctors cure patients”. These words by renowned
psychologist Carl Jung emphasize the invaluable contribution of doctors to humanity. To
celebrate the National Doctors’ Day that falls on July 1, a special Guest lecture on
Diabetes: The impact on society was held on Saturday (01.07.23) at J.J. College of Arts
and Science, Pudukkottai and was organized by the Wilmut Club of PG and Research
Department of Biotechnology. As the day marks the birth anniversary of renowned
physician and former West Bengal Chief Minister Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the
legendary figure was remembered and tributes were paid to him during the event.
The celebrations were aimed at recognizing the efforts of all doctors and healthcare
workers for their services rendered during hard times. The guest lecture was given by
Dr. D. Venkatesh, a renowned physician and Assistant Professor, from the Government
Medical College, Thanjavur, on Diabetes. Apart from educating the science behind the
disease, he urged the students to leave behind the sedentary lifestyle and get indulged in
many physical activities to get rid of obesity which is one of the root causes of diabetes.
Students of the department exhibited their talents by participating in a painting competition
regarding drug abuse and the winners were awarded by prizes by Dr. D. Venkatesh.
Earlier during the inauguration, Dr. G. Manigandan, Assistant Professor and Head
of the Department, urged the students, research scholars and faculty members to come with
innovative and novel ideas to curb the disease. Principal and Trustee madam of the
Institution elucidated the importance of doctors and their service to society.
