The Department of Chemistry was established in 2003-2004. We are offering B.Sc, M.Sc and M.Phil Chemistry. Our syllabi is revised thrice after conferment of autotnomy in 2013, 2015 and 2019. In revision the courses and syllabi due care was taken to satisfy Local, regional, National and Global needs.The Scope of the Programmes expands from +2 to UG,PG and Research levels. The attempt is to ensure study Progression and social relevance through a larger number of CBCS options, provision for latest learning and greater student participation in the teaching learning process. Our curriculum has Skill development courses like Chemistry in everyday life(SBE), Industrial Chemistry (MBE),Certificate Course in Manufacture of Consumer Products.
Our final year PG students and M.Phil Students are doing their projects at various reputed Institutions/Industries like CSIR-CECRI Kaaraikudi, FACT-Kerala etc., Total strength of department is-280. Our department has 9 faculties, out of 9, 5 has obtained Ph.D. The thrust areas of research are Coordination Chemistry, Water treatment, corrosion, Environmental and Physical Chemistry, Phytochemistry and Solid State and Hydrazine Chemistry.
The teachers are using ICT tools like PPT assisted lectures internet based presentations and OHP materials, Students are encouraged to consult various websites and related e-books and journals.
Every year We conduct Special lecture Programmes, Conferences through our Resonance Club of Chemistry, which will enable to enrich their knowledge. Every year our Students Win University ranks, in 2018-2019 Ms.B.Karthigadevi (B.Sc) 4th Rank, ,Ms.J.BenazirBanu (M.Sc) 15th Rank.
Our students Mr V.Akash and Mr.M.Mugundhan Participated in Various competitions,intercollegiate sports and tournaments in Badminton, andMs.A.Phularida and Mr.K.Krishnakumar participated State level Swimming competition and won first prize. Every year our III UG and PG students visit CSIR-CECRI Karaikudi on the annual open day.They win various prizes in INTERSECT Competitions organized by the CSIR-CECRI, Karaikudi, as an annual feature. Every year we organize industrial visits like IISc, Bangalore, ISRO-Tumba,Thiruvanandapuram, Travancore Cochin Chemicals, Kerala.,for enhancing the practical knowledge of the students, We organize National conferences on New vistas in Material Science (NCNVMS-2018) and Recent Innovations in Phytochemistry(RIPC-2019) to improve the subject knowledge of our students and also the outside participants.Our Faculty members periodically publish their research work in reputed journals.Our students participated in various extension programmes organized by NSS,Rotaract,YRC etc., They have played an active role in blood donation and awareness drives.
In Covd-19 our department prepared 50 Lts. of sanitizer and donated it to Police departmenton 01.04.2020.We have enough class rooms, well equipped laboratories and library.In our library we have 09 printed journals, online journals likeInflibnet and Delnet,and 1281 volumes, which will satisfy all the needs of the students and research scholars.Our students are placed in Tamilnadu Government and various reputed concerns. Many of our students so far higher studies and a good proportion get placed or self employed. Dr.C.Muthukumar,HOD, Department of Chemistry, was awarded NSS programme officer for 2018-2019 by BharathidasanUniversity,Thiruchirappalli.

Our students participated in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities and won prizes. Every semester internal FDP is conducted by our College, in this, our department faculty attended and acted as resource persons, which enhances the teaching ability.
Best Practices of our Department is the inculcation of lab culture, Cultivation of the Scientific temper.The department aims at holistic development of the personality of the students. The goal is to make them good citizens capable of fulfilling various roles in society.this is the uniqueness of our department.
